The Horror Mythos Behind Star Wars

Being a graduate of the Southern Californian School of Cinematic Arts, there is no surprise that George Lucas was inspired by all sorts of storytelling, stories that would have a huge impact on young student’s future career as a filmmaker. Science fiction stories like Flash Gordon and Dune were obviously prevalent, alongside Samurai and Western films and mythology. Although, there is one genre that I always enjoy pointing out to friends and fans alike that lie dark and dormant, deep within the Star Wars mythos, the horror of it all!

We’ll start off with this lovely ball of fur. George has gone on record stating that he has always been a huge fan of the classic Universal monsters growing up. So much so that he and designer/fabrication artist Stuart Freeborn adapted the subtle looks of George’s dog at the time (Indiana). They incorporated features of the 1941 Wolfman too.
